This session will give GPs a practical approach to recognising abnormal bleeding, ordering the right tests, and interpreting results with confidence. Using real-world cases, it will help improve early diagnosis and management of patients with suspected bleeding disorders.

Session Plan

• Overview of bleeding disorders in primary care and relevance to general practice.
• Overview of mucosal bleeding, easy bruising and heavy menstrual bleeding. Red flags and when to suspect an underlying bleeding disorder.
• Overview of inherited and acquired bleeding disorders. Clinical features, inheritance patterns and indications for testing in primary care.
• First-line pathology tests, including coagulation studies and factor levels. Practical interpretation of results in a GP setting.
• Best practice for ordering tests, including timing considerations (e.g. suspected VWD), and factors affecting result reliability
• Short case scenarios demonstrating appropriate test selection and clinical decision-making in general practice. Summary of key messages.
