Serum Allergen-Specific IgE testing (RAST): What it can and can't do.

Allergic diseases are a growing health challenge in Australia, affecting about 20% of the population. Conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma are prevalent, with food allergies also a concern, especially among children. Serum allergen-specific IgE testing (RAST) is a crucial tool for GPs in diagnosing allergies, helping them identify specific allergens for targeted advice on management. However, GPs need to understand the test's limitations and integrate its results into a broader clinical context for optimal patient care.

Practical Application Of National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP)

This course will provide participants with comprehensive knowledge on high-risk oncogenic HPV types, their association with cervical disease, and the current National Guidelines for Cervical Screening, including appropriate testing protocols. Additionally, participants will learn how to register with Telstra Health to access the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) and how to access and navigate the NCSP guidelines effectively.

The Role of Iron Studies and Routine Tests in the Diagnostic Approach to Iron Deficiency

According to a number of studies, up to 5% of Australia's population is affected by iron deficiency anaemia. High-risk groups include preschool-aged children and pregnant women, while pre-menopausal women face a 15% risk, with higher rates among Aboriginal women. Patients often present with nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue and dyspnoea on exertion, requiring further investigation. Given the potential for severe complications, it is crucial for GPs to adopt an accurate initial diagnostic approach using iron studies and laboratory tests to promptly treat any of the multiple underlying associated diseases.
