Serum Allergen-Specific IgE testing (RAST) | 4Cyte Pathology

Serum Allergen-Specific IgE testing (RAST): What it can and can't do.

Self-paced Webinar for GPs

Allergic diseases are a growing health challenge in Australia, affecting about 20% of the population. Conditions like allergic rhinitis and asthma are prevalent, with food allergies also a concern, especially among children. Serum allergen-specific IgE testing (RAST) is a crucial tool for GPs in diagnosing allergies, helping them identify specific allergens for targeted advice on management. However, GPs need to understand the test's limitations and integrate its results into a broader clinical context for optimal patient care.

Learning objectives

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and distinguish clinical presentations of allergic (type I) versus non-allergic reactions involving common environmental agents.
  2. Choose optimal laboratory tests for allergic disease based on an understanding of the nature of specific serum IgE testing (RAST).
  3. List indications for serum allergen-specific IgE (RAST) testing and identify the situations where it would be unlikely to aid a diagnosis.
