The Role of Iron Studies and Routine Tests in the Diagnostic Approach to Iron Deficiency

Live Webinar for GPs

According to a number of studies, up to 5% of Australia's population is affected by iron deficiency anaemia. High-risk groups include preschool-aged children and pregnant women, while pre-menopausal women face a 15% risk, with higher rates among Aboriginal women. Patients often present with nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue and dyspnoea on exertion, requiring further investigation. Given the potential for severe complications, it is crucial for GPs to adopt an accurate initial diagnostic approach using iron studies and laboratory tests to promptly treat any of the multiple underlying associated diseases.

Learning objectives

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. List key risk factors in the population associated with iron deficiency in Australia population.
  2. Summarize how to interpret iron studies and routine laboratory tests in diagnosing iron deficiency.
  3. Identify potential underlying causes of iron deficiency considering the findings from iron studies and routine laboratory tests.
